Gloucestershire is known for it’s stunning countryside and typically English atmosphere. Visitors to the county can enjoy the joys of the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds, both of which are considered national treasures. Although the county town of Gloucestershire is Gloucester, it is Cheltenham that draws in the tourists. The town not only incorporates part of the breathtaking scenery of the Cotswolds, it is an ancient spa town and probably best known for it’s race course.
Cheltenham Racecourse is renowned for the annual National Hunt racing event that attracts visitors from across the world. The prestigious nature of the event makes it a must in the calendar of any horse racing enthusiast, whether it is for the excitement of betting, the love of racing or for being part of a high society event. The festival is a four day event and features the famed Gold Cup, a grade one National Hunt race. This race in particular attracts the best horses from around the world which attempt to complete the 22 fence steeplechase. The 2008 Gold Cup offered a winning prize of a stunning 450,000 GBP, making it the most valuable race in the UK.
Getting Cheltenham tickets for each day could prove to be as expensive as going on a luxury holiday, but the experience will be worth every penny. As well as the Gold Cup, there is Ladies day, another sought after attendance day for the festival. Ladies Day is just as famed for it’s fashion as it is for the racing that takes place. The long standing tradition gives the races a nostalgic feel that attracts visitors wanting an authentic English experience. Given that races at the Cheltenham course have been taking place for almost 200 years, there is no shortage of tradition and depth to be found at the festival.
For visitors wishing to make the most of the atmosphere, splashing out on a Cheltenham ticket for a hospitality package is a treat of a lifetime that won’t ever be forgotten. In addition to the new course, there is a new restaurant and new private suites. These VIP areas offer an unprecedented view of the final stretch and the finishing post. The race can be watched in the lap of luxury and ultimate comfort with a complimentary bar, a four course dinner and afternoon tea. There are also private balconies available to watch the racing action accompanied by your fellow guests.
After all the excitement of the racing events, Cheltenham is the perfect place to relax. The holiday cottages and hotels in the area guarantee a chance to unwind, and the gently rolling pastures and calming architecture that can be found in the Cotswolds guarantees relaxation and recuperation. However, for those that still have an abundant amount of energy, there are some incredible walks in the town and the surrounding area.
On the whole, Gloucestershire is a quiet paradise that is quintessentially English. Visitors should really make sure that enough time is put aside to completely wind down and fully appreciate the pace of life in the South west of England. There are so many attractions that are an understated example of English tradition that it would be a shame to leave the area without exploring some of the more gentle pastimes on offer from Cheltenham.
