If you are over 45 and trying to get pregnant you can lower the risks and increase the chances of becoming pregnant with a few simple tips. My doctor friend calls these her pregnancy prescriptions and recommends them to any woman trying to conceive.
Make sure you are taking folic acid every day to cut the risk of neural tube defects in the fetus.
Watch your weight: less than 95 percent or more than 120 percent of your ideal body weight inhibits conception. However: excessive exercise can lower your chances of getting pregnant
Decrease or stop your intake of alcohol as even a moderate amount can affect fertility. Your chances of conception are reduced by nearly a fifth with just one drink a week and drop to half with five or six drinks – and don’t forget alcohol is bad for sperm too. Caffeine has also been shown to affect conception rate and it is best to reduce or cut it out.
Have sex every other day around the time of ovulation, and if you can’t tell him when this is, make sure you have sex when you most feel like it. Don’t have sex every day as this lowers sperm counts, and don’t use lubricants during sex as they can slow down or even kill sperm.
Make sure you get plenty of sleep and buy your partner a pair of baggy boxer shorts to try and maximize sperm production.
Cut out recreational drugs and check the side effects of any medication you are taking, especially tranquillizers, steroids and antihypertensives. This applies to herbal medicines too; St. John’s wort has been shown to damage sperm and many herbs, including gingko and ginseng, can have adverse effects on conception and pregnancy,
Both partners must stop smoking.
